Start with the business use case
Interac e-Transfer can support different business activities, but the useful question is not simply whether a company “accepts e-Transfer.” The useful question is how money needs to move, who initiates it, how the business identifies the payer or recipient, and how the finance team confirms and reconciles the transaction.
Provider-dependent
Features, transaction limits, fees, timing, bulk capabilities, payment requests, APIs, files, and reporting can vary by participating financial institution or provider.
Collection questions
- Does the customer initiate the transfer or respond to a payment request?
- How is the payment linked to an invoice, order, account, property, or client?
- What remittance information accompanies the payment?
- Who handles unmatched, late, duplicate, or incorrect payments?
- Can the business export or integrate payment data?
Payout questions
- Who are the recipients and how are their payment instructions maintained?
- What approval controls apply before funds are released?
- Are transactions one-time, recurring, scheduled, or batch-oriented?
- How are failed, expired, declined, or changed transfers handled?
- How are payouts reconciled to the underlying business record?
Prepare for the provider conversation
Estimate the monthly transaction count, total value, typical transaction size, largest expected transaction, recipient count, and operational frequency. Document whether the business needs a portal, file upload, API, accounting export, or simply a more manual process.
Use accurate language
Do not publish universal statements about limits, security, instant availability, or guaranteed timing. The live website should describe the business use case while making provider dependence clear.
